Carol: Finishing

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Question: We have a show pig that we are feeding 6 lbs of Honor show pig food (19%). I would like to know what do I need to feed the pig to finish her off. She is at 202 lbs and we have 30 days before the show. The Pig is wide in front and back. The hams are still flabby. I just need to know what I need to add to the diet. Thank you!

Answer: Carol,

Thank you for your email and for choosing HONOR Show Chow showpig products.

The Showpig Grower is our highest crude protein grow/finish type showpig feed. It generally keeps pigs fairly lean. I am not sure what is meant about the hams being flabby. Most modern judges want more body condition than in the past (0.5 to 1.0 inches backfat). So, the flabby hams may not be a bad thing.

If the gilt needs more body condition, I suggest our HONOR Show Chow Showpig 16 feed. This feed contains a high energy content and will help to put cover on your gilt.

If she needs more top shape, I suggest adding 1 lb per day High Octane Champion Drive.

The flabby hams can be taken care of with moderate exercise.

Thanks again,
