Rey: Feeding

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Question: In your opinion, what would be the best way to feed a show goat 5 to 10 days prior to show ring competition?

Answer: Rey,

Thank you for your email.

Feeding any animal 5 days prior to show depends upon what you are still trying to accomplish. For example, you might be still trying to add more top or muscle, or you might be wanting to increase cover. In those circumstances, you would need to feed the goat as you have been previously until it is at the point of your goal.

If the goat or any show animal is where you need them to be as far as muscle, cover, skin, hair, (wool) etc then I believe in not changing the diet much. We continue to feed right into show the way we had been previously.

However, just prior to and during the show it may be a good idea to use electrolytes to counter the stress of show preparation, transportation, and the actual showing of the animal.

Thanks again,
