Steve: Weight Question

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Question: My show calf weighs 590 lbs he is 6 months old and our county fair is next September. My question is he at the right weight for his age and the time till our fair?

Answer: Steve,

Thank you for contacting the Honor Show Chow Website!

What is your anticipated target weight for this steer?

1,350 lbs (?) to 590 lbs = 760 lbs / 270 days (?) = 2.8 lbs/day average daily gain needed.

Most beef calves are weaned at 190 to 220 days of age and will weigh between 450 to 650 pounds. Considering that information, I would say your calf is right on target.

What breed of steer are you feeding?

I would encourage you to feed him our HSC Fitters Edge and adjust his feed (if needed) later in the feeding phase to achieve your desired look and finish. Please continue to monitor his gain every 30 to 45 days to make sure he is gaining at the proper rate.

Keep up the great work and please let me know if you have any additional
questions!
